Active Release Technique

Introducing Active Release Techniques®

Active Release Techniques® (ART®) is a patented, soft tissue system, which was initially designed to treat problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves.

How Do Overuse Conditions Occur?

Over-used muscles (and other soft tissues) change in three important ways:

Active Release Technique*acute conditions (pulls, tears, collisions etc)
*accumulation of small tears (micro-trauma)
*insufficient oxygen (hypoxia)

Each of these factors may cause your body to produce tough, dense scar tissue in the affected area. This scar tissue binds up and ties down tissues which need to move freely. As scar tissue builds up, muscles become shorter and weaker, tension on tendons cause tendonitis and nerves may become trapped. This can cause reduced range of motion, loss of strength and pain. If a nerve is trapped, you may also feel tingling, numbness and weakness.

History Of Active Release Technique

Although ART is new to the UK it has been developed in the United States over the last two decades.
The founder of Active Release Techniques® is Dr P. Michael Leahy, DC. He noticed that his patients’ symptoms seemed to be related to changes in their soft tissue that could be felt by hand. By observing how muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments and nerves responded to different types of work, Dr. Leahy was consistently able to resolve  a great number of his patients’ problems. He now teaches and certifies health care providers all over the world to use Active Release Techniques®

Active Release TechniqueAbout Active Release Techniques®

Active Release Techniques® have a unique and highly specific approach to treating each and every muscle in the body. In doing so, ART® can bring about much faster and more effective changes in the soft tissues of the neuromusculoskeletal system.

Active Release Techniques® and Overuse Conditions

The body's own natural response, to repairing overworked muscle, is an inflammatory cycle that leads to the random fibrotic repair of injured tissue. This may lead to pain, weakness or fatigue of specific muscles. A common name for overuse conditions is repetitive strain injury (RSI) which in the last 5 years has increased dramatically. People in the workplace and  general population are finding that Active Release Techniques® is returning muscles to their normal strength and providing effective pain relief.
